Birch Laminate, Silk Screen, Milk Paint
Born, raised, educated, and employed in the Midwest, I consider both Iowa and Ohio home. Oftentimes it can be difficult to balance family when heart and mind are in two different places at once. For this particular piece I focused on highly recognizable icons: the state birds of Iowa and Ohio. This piece is also a reflection of the type of art commonly hung in rural midwest homes, with a modern twist.
The framed companion QR Code linked to deck-ohiowa.com, displayed an animated .gif that documented the process used to create my piece.
The first iteration of this piece was created for AIGA Toledo's Half and Half Summer Show. The exhibition challenged participants to create a piece that was one part "of the hand" and one part digital media. The show was on display in the University of Toledo CVA Gallery at the Toledo Museum of Art.
The second iteration of this piece was applied to a skate deck and shown at Bordo Bello 2012 in Denver, Colorado. Bordo Bello is hosted by AIGA Colorado and is a fundraiser in which all proceeds from the auction go to fund mentorship programs.
